The Problem

Focus Group is one of the UK’s leading independent providers of essential business technology, delivering telecoms, connectivity, IT, cyber security and mobile solutions for SMEs to global enterprise businesses, across every sector.

When I joined Focus Group, a leading UK-based telecoms and IT provider, there was no in-house marketing department. Despite rapid business growth, the company lacked a unified brand, internal communications strategy, and a consistent marketing presence. This was limiting both staff engagement and external brand awareness — critical for future expansion and investment opportunities.

The Solution

I established and led the company’s first-ever marketing department, growing it from a one-person function to a five-person team over three years. Our scope was end-to-end: from strategic planning to hands-on creative execution.

Key initiatives included:

  • "This is Focus" – a bold internal brand campaign that unified the company’s mission, values, and culture. It became the backbone of internal communications and employer branding.

  • A complete overhaul of the company’s marketing channels, including: A bespoke CMS website, targeted email marketing, social media campaigns, brochures and print collateral and national events and activations

  • Brand support for the opening of new regional branches across the UK.

  • Creative and strategic direction for acquisition marketing, helping integrate newly acquired companies under the Focus brand.

The Impact

Private equity investment: Our brand and marketing efforts directly supported Focus Group’s successful acquisition by a private equity firm — helping the company scale from a £1 million valuation to over £750 million.

  1. Award-winning team: We won Best Marketing Team and Best Marketing Campaign at industry awards, with “This is Focus” becoming a benchmark for internal branding.

  2. National expansion: Marketing played a central role in the company’s geographic and commercial growth, with new offices, integrated acquisitions, and national brand recognition.

  3. Cultural transformation: The marketing department helped shape a strong internal culture, connecting over 900+ staff through storytelling, design, and communication.
